What are we doing to our feet?
Chronic Foot Pain
Our bodies adapt to change
If we move more we get stronger, fitter....
In contrast, if we move less we get weaker right? Have you ever seen a leg that has just come out of a cast? It is skinnier, the muscle has wasted away due to lack of movement and any involved joints have become stiff.
So why then do we put our feet in 'casts' (ie our shoes) everyday but then expect them to be strong, and wonder why they are so stiff?
Our feet are made to move
Most of the joints in our bodies are made to move, if they don't they become stiff and sore. Our feet are no different. The 33 joints in our feet are made to move, even if just a small amount.
Our feet are shock absorbers and should relax and stiffen throughout the gait cycle for efficient walking and running.
Do your shoes allow your feet to move?
If our feet were made to move and sense the ground, then it doesn't make sense to put them in shoes that do the opposite.
what makes more sense?
We can rebuild our feet from the ground up (pardon the pun). The right challenge at the right dosage will allow our feet to adapt, become more resilient. Our balance will improve, our reliance on orthotics decreases and so does the need for surgery for conditions such as bunions and Mortons Neuroma. We can even stop or reduce recurring ankle sprains. We'll be able to walk or run further with less pain and maybe even our hips and knees will perform better!
How good does it feel to take your shoes off at the end of the day? Why?
So what do we do?
We move more, we assess our footwear and we use active treatment to slowly work towards having a better foot day!
